Accessibility
This site is built to be usable by as many people as possible, including people who use screen readers, magnification, keyboard only navigation, speech input, or high contrast display modes. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 at level AA.
The page is written as structured HTML with a single main heading, meaningful section headings in order, and landmark regions for the header, main content, and footer. A skip link at the top of the page moves keyboard focus directly to the counter.
Every interactive control on this page is a real button, link, or form field, reachable and operable by keyboard alone. Focus is visible at all times, using an outline that meets contrast requirements against the page background rather than relying on colour alone.
Colour is used on this page to group countries by world region. It is never the only way that information is conveyed. Every region filter carries its name in text beside the colour, every country row states its region for assistive technology, and every figure carries a written label.
Sortable column headings expose their state to assistive technology as well as showing a direction arrow, and the region filters report whether they are currently active.
The counter updates continuously. It is deliberately not announced to assistive technology on every tick, because a value that changes several times a second would make the page unusable with a screen reader. The surrounding text states the figures and explains what they mean in a form that reads cleanly.
If your system is set to reduce motion, the page respects that preference. The pulse beside the counter stops animating, smooth scrolling is disabled, and transitions are suppressed. The counter itself still updates, since it is the content of the page rather than decoration.
Text is set in relative units and scales with your browser or operating system font size. The layout reflows to a single column on small screens and remains readable at 200 percent zoom without horizontal scrolling of the main content. The country table scrolls horizontally on narrow screens, which is the accepted pattern for wide tabular data.
Colour combinations on this page were chosen to meet or exceed the contrast ratios required at level AA for body text, headings, and interface controls. Large display figures also meet the large text threshold.
The legal documents on this page open in a native dialog element. Focus moves into the dialog when it opens, is contained while it is open, returns to the button that opened it when it closes, and the Escape key closes it.
Some limitations remain. Advertising is supplied by a third party and its markup is outside our control, so we cannot guarantee that every advertisement meets the same standard as the rest of the page. Where we can influence placement, advertisements are kept out of the reading order of the main content.
Accessibility is treated as ongoing work rather than a finished state. The site is reviewed as it changes, and issues found are fixed rather than documented and left.
If you encounter a barrier on this site, please tell us. Write to the address in the footer, describe the page and what happened, and mention the assistive technology and browser you were using. We will respond and we will fix what we can.
